Why is the Facebook App creation currently disabled?
I noticed that I can no longer create new Facebook apps based on my widgets in Widgetbox. Why is this?

Inappropriate?Hey all,
We'll be disabling the creating of new Facebook applications via Widgetbox temporarily. This is to allow us time to adapt to the changes that we need to make for the New Facebook to work. -
I had another question.
I currently have a facebook application
and wanted to see if I could turn it into
a widget.
Can you do this?
Renee Talbot -
Inappropriate?Do you have any idea when it'll be back up?
-
I think it is up now.....
Go check. -
Inappropriate?Heather and WebGrocer,
We've not established a timeframe yet. We'll be sure to update this thread as soon as more information is available.
-
Inappropriate?Do you know of any alternative that we can use?
-
Inappropriate?Hey Lukas,
What kind of widget are you trying to get into a Facebook app? I might know an option depending on the type. -
Inappropriate?any ideas on how to get a facebook app simply based on a url?
-
Inappropriate? You mean like an iframe of a webpage into a Facebook app? You'd need to write that in FBML yourself, unfortunately.
-
Inappropriate? To be honest, I'm not exactly sure. I just created a widget on widget box using the Web Page option. I entered my URL and was able to create the iGoogle widget and other widgets. Am I going to be able to use this same options when creating a facebook app from my WidgetBox widget?
-
Inappropriate?Hey Mike,
I get what you're asking. If the accelerator was up, we'd just convert it over and be done with it. Since it's not, I don't know of another service that will be able to take care of this for you.
-
Inappropriate? Then I guess I'll wait... thanks for the info.
-
Inappropriate?Hi Dave,
It's just your basic rss reader widget. Do you know what I can use?
Thanks!

Inappropriate?Dave,
I'm sure you would've updated the thread if there was an update...but I thought I'd check and see if there was any progress to report here. :) Also, a quick question - is there another way (or site to use) to make a "Mixits" widget work on Facebook while you guys are out of commission?
Thanks,
KevOz
I’m inquisitive
-
Inappropriate?Hey Kev,
No updates so far! What you could possibly do is find a Facebook app (in their gallery) that allows you to run HTML, Flash, or Javascript and make the content of that app the widget code snippet.
I know that Facebook had a 'Flash' application before, but I'm not sure if it's still around or what shape it's in. That may be a direction to check, though.
-
Inappropriate?Hi Dave,
Not trying to be a pest, but I too am wondering about when we will be able to easily get our widgets back in Facebook apps again?
Thanks
I’m unsure
-
Inappropriate?Hey all,
Still no updates. We're looking into it, but to be frank, the benefit of simple Facebook apps is very low anymore with the new FB profile.
-
It is of huge benefit to us since we have no other way to distribute our widgets on Facebook and would like to do more of it. -
Totally fair! But keep in mind that the metrics say that any of these widgets being distributed as apps (i.e. no major social features built in) are getting a fraction of the traffic that they once did since they were moved to the boxes tab. -
But some apps can be added to the wall, and some apps write stories to the wall, ie., in the case of an rss feed that is updated, even if the App itself is on the boxes tab, the story is updated on the wall, which is what we all want anyways. -
Hey Chrissy,
A totally valid point. Our focus has admittedly been more on blogs and other websites than facebook. We'll see if that changes this year, but in the meantime, no plans to make a big push to support FB apps at this time. -
Inappropriate?...still holding out hope for the Widget Box Facebook app tool.... <sigh></sigh>
I’m disappointed
-
Inappropriate?Hey Mike,
We're still working to find the best solution here. No news yet. If you're using a blidget, be sure to check out iWidgets.com as they have an awesome Facebook app tool for people in need of a social widget powered by an RSS feed.
-
Inappropriate?over 2 months now and I am still waiting on the accelerator.
Are you guys plannng to do this or shelved this project. I am surprised such a core feature was taken offline and no concrete plans. I see so many not-so-obviously-important features being released but nothing to support the new facebook.....time to give up on you guys and look for a developer who would do this....sad..since I love what you guys have set out to do...but there seem to be many distractions..... -
Inappropriate? There are no plans to return the accelerator at this time. As mentioned above, I'll post here when and if we plan to re-enable the facebook accelerator.
-
Inappropriate? Please keep me informed of any update on the widget application! Thanks!
I would love to have it.

Inappropriate?I've had a couple of complaints from Facebook users who installed our widget which is now broken. i really wish you'd fix this. It looks like the app installs but gives the error "No facebook app widget retrieved." People who installed before the problem occurred have a functioning app. We are stuck with no recourse and don't want to kill the app since it does work for early installers.
I’m not happy widgetbox facebooks apps are broken!
-
Hey Susan,
Thanks for the feedback. We're aware that this issue sucks for everyone involved. -
Inappropriate?I still love WidgetBox for their original promise they setout to achieve. Now I am not sure where they are going.
At OblinQ.com, we relied on Widgetbox to widgetize and get the viral benefit for both us as a company and our community users.
Now it appears we may have to implement our own Widget wrappers for social networks.
Hopefully more users weigh in so that we can influence them.
I’m not happy
-
Inappropriate?Well this sucks. The whole reason I was making a widget is to allow people to put it on places like Facebook and MySpace... and after I was done, and couldn't find the the option to generate a Facebook link do I read this.
I think you are making a huge mistake if you kill that functionality off, Facebook is by far the biggest platform for these things, with much more potential than things like iGoogle or Netvibes and their ilk.
I’m disapointed
-
Inappropriate?I second that statement. This SUCKS!
4 months and no solution? This is costing me money. Not cool. My apps were gaining some pretty good popularity in Facebook before they were shut down. Thankfully I can still keep my original core of users, that is, as long as they don't ever remove my app!
It's really too bad, up until this fiasco with the new Facebook, widgetbox has been head and shoulders above the rest in the world of widgets. Oh well, I guess everyone takes a backward step once in a while.
I haven't given up on you yet widgetbox because you're still performing great on all of the other platforms. However, continued disappointments will force me to look elsewhere.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Lazar and where2look,
The metrics would not agree with your statement that FB is the biggest place for widgets and apps... maybe for your business, this is true. As a general statement, however, the vast majority of apps without deep integration will fail on Facebook. It's not that we can't offer some duct-tape implementation, but rather that setting you up to fail with that implementation isn't helping anyone.
Rather, I'd highly suggest looking elsewhere for your FB app needs. I've recommended iwidgets.com to more people than I can recall as a great solution if you have an RSS-based widget (such as w2look's widgets). Other than that, there aren't too many folks out there that will make FB work for you without getting some of that sweet coin that you're trying to make on FB.
Trust me, if FB hadn't change their application platform and profile pages, we would have loved to continue giving you access. Unfortunately, their changes made that nearly impossible to accomplish. You're welcome to aim some of your frustration at FB, if you dare! :p
-
Having just made a widget and hoping to get it distributed to all my friends on facebook, i'm very disappointed. What is most frustrating is all of your helps and docs say it does work with facebook. I think this needs to be updated so people new to widgetbox don't spend so much time searching for why the facebook button doesn't display on their "add widget" button. -
Hey Laurie,
We've been removing the Facebook app content from most docs pages. Is it possible that the stuff that you saw was about adding widgets to Facebook, which is still possible? I'd love a link to the docs you're referring to so that I can correct them if they're inaccurate! Thanks in advance. -
Inappropriate?"RSS-based widget (such as w2look's widget)"??????
ONE count it ONE of my 12 apps is RSS based! The rest are either html web page based on written right on your widgetbox platform!
As for the "sweet coin", isn't that what the DevShare program is for? Widgetbox has been taking care of itself right from the get go, but I don't blame them for that, I'm all for it. Widgetbox is providing a service and they should be able to profit from it some how.
Oh well, I'm not going to argue about any of this, because I still enjoy the service I'm getting from widgetbox.
I guess I'll just have to work on recreating my widgets as flash widgets and possibly incorporate them into facebook through Gygya.com's services.
Who knows, maybe two widgets will be better than one?
I’m indifferent

What's a good app for creating PDFs that look professional and is intuitive/easy to use? Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro is the industry standard, but I tried it and it didn't really seem like a good fit for my needs, mostly for the same reasons I don't use Acrobat itself for *viewing* PDFs, not enough options—I use PDF-XChange Viewer. So I tried the 'creator' version of that, PDF-Tools 4, but was unpleasantly surprised to find it wasn't really like I had hoped either. -
Good app for creating PDF's = PDF Factory Pro. Giz a shout if you can't get hold of it : ) -

Inappropriate?Any Update to this feature yet???
-
Inappropriate?Chris,
No. Per my other posts, we have no plans to revisit this at this time. When that changes, I'll be sure to post here.
-
Cheers, thanks Dave... I'll stay tuned! -
Inappropriate? So it is not impossible you do then, Mr. Rhea. Which is nice. I am just a single person having fun with what I make but I am sure there will be more seriousness on Facebook and greater awareness of the Facebook "boxes" if there were more good, more serious, apps to choose from. And I think an app on Facebook would make Widgetbox even more popular. I understand it is difficult, though, to make because of what Facebook allows.
Thank you for a fine service! And for your great replies here.
I’m a Christian.
-
My pleasure, Anders! Hopefully we'll get this going again at some point. The demand here on GetSatisfaction certainly helps. -
Inappropriate?Perhaps Widgetbox could look at putting together something like what Widgadet.com has done or what Gigya has done with Gydget.com.
Put up a Widgetbox Facebook app where all Widgetbox widgets could be added?
Might be the easier solution than setting it up for individual apps.
I’m undecided
-
It's definitely something that we're talking about. We're trying to decide now whether that solution actually solves the needs of the majority of our users or not (single app v. app per widget). Thanks for the suggestion! -
Well I don't know , what is the reason behind but guess. Facebook is a social website. Many people visit it daily, having different profiles. So it is quite secure ti disable application .rhinestones -

Inappropriate?I'll most likely update this thread if we roll something back out.
For now, Blidget Pro owners can make use of the Beta version of our new application tool by clicking the 'Make a Facebook App' button on their widget dashboard. This tool is currently only available for Blidget Pro's, not any other widgets.
-
Inappropriate?HI!
I'm new here and very much interested in making a facebook app. did you mean that with Blidget Pro I can make a facebook app again? Cuz apparently the app accelerator is down, which was the original reason why I came here.
So with blidget Pro its ok again?
I’m excited
-
With a Blidget Pro, you can make a Facebook app of your blidget Pro, yes.
Just to clarify, it doesn't mean that you can make a facebook app of any widget just because you bought a Blidget Pro. I want to make that clear so that no one comes back after spending money thinking that I lead them astray!
Hope this helps. -
Inappropriate?Dave,
Can you put a link where we can read more info about this?
For e.g. does the widget-pro create a box on Facebook, what are the options, where on FB can the widget be configured to appear.. Will this be gauranteed to be supported in the future.
The concern is can we rely on Widgetbox.com, if we use this Blidget-Pro/Facebook as our tech strategy. The constant uncertainty that you guys will giveup and pull the plug on the next change at FB, makes me worry about relying on you and your offerings.
Though I like the value you offer and there is definite potential. Its just deciding us doing it ourselves our rely on you.
I’m undecided
-
Hey OblinQ,
It's still in Beta, so there are no docs up yet.
Yes, it supports creation of both a profile box and a tab. Additionally, since you can't display flash on a Facebook profile without user-interaction, we also have a tool in place that takes a screenshot of your blidget once per hour and sets that as the image on the profile which users must click to display the blidget. This way users get to see the most up to date content of your blidget even without rendering the SWF on the page, and you maintain the look and feel of the blidget that your created. It's pretty cool, although there are certainly kinks that we're working out with the screenshotting part.
No it won't be guaranteed to be supported forever (it's Beta). What's that line from the movie "Tommy Boy" about guarantees? Point being that nothing on the internet is guaranteed. Especially when it relies on another service that's constantly changing their direction (Facebook).
This is an added feature of the Blidget Pro, which is a service for paying customers. If it leaves Beta, I'd expect support to remain, as people paid for a specific feature. It certainly won't hurt our feelings if you decide to do it yourself. :) -
Thanks Dave. Thats good information. I am eager to see this after it gets out of beta. And that image thing you describe is a nice touch indeed. -
Inappropriate?Might be due to security reasons Facebook application have been disabled.
-
It was disabled initially due to major Facebook platform changes that required a complete rewrite of the accelerator, as well as changes to all previously created applications (that the user would have to be walked through), as well as metrics on Facebook applications dropping about 90% globally once they changed everything. All of those were contributors (as well as other things not worth mentioning) to the move to disable the accelerator. -
Inappropriate?Hello
i was an intensive user of App accelerator before it went down. I sent many messages to WB without any results. i was desperate and i knew that the accelerator will never go back )=
Since i'm a developer i managed to create a personal script that does a very similar job to FB App accelerator and it gave me some really nice results .
In the beginning it was a bit buggy but now its perfectly working (= so if there is anyone who wants to get his widgets accelerated on FB , i will be glad to help (=

Hey Warren,
Thanks for being a fan! The FB app Accelerator was originally disabled due to FB's platform changes that pretty much broke everything,
We do have the accelerator back (in Beta) for Blidget Pro users and are working to add it back for all widgets of Pro users. I suspect, based on our current priorities, that this feature will stay on the Widgetbox Pro side of the fence for the foreseeable future.
I generally post here when there's an update, so just stay tuned to this thread.
Hope this helps, Warren.

Inappropriate? For those of you using the Beta version, we identified and fixed 2 issues that were affecting the profile images quite a bit.
It's fixed as of today (at around 4:00pm Pacific), so you should have better luck at getting the images (used on the profile to display your blidget before a user clicks) working properly.
Still working on rolling this out to all Pro users for all widgets. It's going pretty well and should be even easier now that we finally squashed the bugs thta we did this week.
-
Inappropriate?Hey Dave,
Well it sort of helped but the thing is I'm not a Blidget Pro. If you guys are able to help me out with creating a simple FaceBook app so I can then tell my users about it then please feel free to help out I'm more than happy to advertise your companies and products through all of my websites.
I just need a page like http://798.widgetbox.com/ that goes to http://widgetbox.798inc.co.uk/ - that page basically goes to my gallery section on WidgetBox where my fans and users can add my widgets to their sites. It would be a good idea if you made me a sub-domain like that then what I will do is if you guys can either show me how to make my own javascript adverts I will make some adverts based on WidgetBox and help you guys get your message through to other people.
As a frequent user of WidgetBox I know what it has done for me and what it's capable of doing, I just need a sub-domain from WidgetBox and a FaceBook app based on my link us button either with adverts or not.
If you want me to give you the login details to my WidgetBox area then I'm more than happy to help out.
Please email me back at: site@798inc.co.uk if you would like to help me out. Thanks.
Take care and I just want to say "WIDGETBOX RULEZ!" sorry, force of habbit. I just had to say it. :D

Inappropriate?Hi, I'm a Blidget-Pro user - Should it still be in open beta for me?
Thanks
Rob
I’m amused
-
Rob - Yes, it's fully open still. I don't expect it to close anytime soon as we're working rather to open it up out of beta soon.
Your blidget will need to be in Pro mode (there's a switch inside the blidget editor to set it to Pro). Once it is, head to the dashboard page and you can click the 'Make a Facebook app' brick to get started. -
Inappropriate?Excellent!
I was blundering around and guess my widget wasn't in pro mode - as soon as I created one in Pro, the facebook brick showed up!

Inappropriate?i have an idea about the facebook app creation center? you know how you guys setted it up so we could make Bebo apps, well turns out that Facebook use the same method. On Bebo you have to add the DEVELOPERS application from the Bebo app list before you can create a Bebo app. Well, i found yesturday that on Facebook you have to add the Facebook DEVELOPERS application from the Facebook app list before you can create a Facebook app. Facebook use the app key, app id and user id methods in the canvas page same as Bebo does. Using this idea you can simply fix your problem with the creation center on Widgetbox by making the same set up page like you did for the Bebo developer app through Widgetbox. Basically, you need to create the same page as this:
http://www.widgetbox.com/dash/bebowiz...
for the Facebook creation center on your site. Once you done it similar setup style like that page (link above) but on your site for Facebook, Make sure you email me at: email@798mail.co.cc and I will test it out for you. If I find errors I will tell you as soon as possible.
I am a user and member of Widgetbox, however I would love to be a staff member online, I don't want to be paid for me helping out, in addition you can teach me how to create more effective widgets and apps. I will test your newly developed creations and report all my status and findings back to you guys as soon as possible.

Hey Warren,
Sorry, but the Bebo accelerator was made based on the FB accelerator. When FB changed the platform, however, it changed things around significantly enough to make the backend that powers the apps stop working. We've built this functionality again for Blidget Pro's and are working on other FB functionality in the future. -
Inappropriate? The whole reason I subscribed to a PRO account was for the full facebook app features... and they have been disabled / in beta since my sign-up.
Is there still no firm date when we can expect that functionality to be working?
-
Hi Rob,
Making Facebook applications from basic widgets (non-blidgets) has been disabled and making Facebook apps from blidgets has been in Beta since before Widgetbox Pro accounts existed. We've worked out most of the issues on the blidget side, but are constantly working around other quirks in the FB platform. I imagine we'll be in beta for less time than gmail was. :p And we don't want users to experience issues without the knowledge that it's still a work in progress (e.g. Beta).
Facebook's platform changes required us to rebuild our support form the ground up, which is no small task. No I do not have a firm date to communicate to our user base yet. -
Inappropriate?Dave, Rob, George and the rest of the team, I would like to ask if it's possible if I can join your support team online for Widgetbox. I know some bits of Widgets and other things, but I could give you guys ideas and you can use them in further increasing experience towards Widgetbox and other services you and your companies might have or already own.
I own www.798inc.co.cc and many other websites and companies, online and a few of them are used offline mainly for my productions of my own content and stories (since I don't like people taking credit for things I created, this is why I chose Widgetbox for creating my own Widgets from scratch) and simply, I do like providing ideas and tips to people online, most of them ask me for help.
My friend asked me the other day on how I create Widgets so I told him that you can use Microsoft Notepad to make some simple codes from scratch (using notes from websites, books, etc.) and putting them together in a way that makes a perfect Widget itself. Although, it's quiet difficult trying to make one.
I made my own first ever Facebook App and it's working okay, it's just... you guys need to create the same method as you did for Bebo App center on your site, simply make the center so that it says we have to beable to be already logged into Facebook and already added the Developers App to our profile (same thing we have to do on Bebo to start creating apps, from any location or place that lets us make Widgets/Apps) then we have to open a new window that shows the Developers App and lets us move and/or transfer Widgets/Apps to Facebook. You already made it work for numerous sites including:
www.bebo.com
www.freewebs.com
www.piczo.com
www.blogger.com
www.wordpress.com
www.wordpress.org
www.blogspot.com
and many others, however, Facebook App center on your Widgetbox site is either not finished or it needs correcting somewhere. You made a mistake somewhere in the making of the page on your site, You could easily try getting Facebook to help you out and then from there it should be as simple as a walk in the park (hopefully).

Hey Warren,
You're always welcome to be an active part of the community. THat's the best way to help out with support.
As I mentioned earlier, we're working on restoring widgets > FB App support in the future, but it's a matter of time and priorities. -
Inappropriate?Hey Rob,
thanks for your help. If you need any help with anything at Widgetbox I'm more than welcome to help out. Most of my friends have never heard of it.
I could tell them about it but it would really make things easier if I had a email at Widgetbox like: warren@widgetbox.com
that would be cool. I would tell everyone about Widgetbox on my website and help you guys out whenever you need it.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?Hi there team,
Thanks and yes I will join the team. I'm more than happy to lend a hand and help out with anything at WidgetBox. I love the site. I heard about it at Piczo first and then I found out that Bebo use it too and then FreeWebs and other sites after that. I show my apps and widgets that I made at WidgetBox and SpringWidgets directly on my site. I sorted them out so that people know which ones I made at WidgetBox and at SpringWidgets.
I like the logo you have and I'm great with providing ideas, If I have any ideas that come to my mind I'll let you know about them.
I do hope the Facebook app creation center gets up and running by next year, that way I can create my first Facebook app using WidgetBox and hopefully you can see how I do it and everyone else will follow.
I already created one using the links you get on the Bebo app center on your site, used it where it says syndication/beboapp/- i changed it to syndication/facebookapp/- and then my app started working properly on Facebook. I created an app on Facebook but I never made my widgets from WidgetBox work on Facebook yet.
I hope I do though at some point, my site needs a great way to get visits. I think WidgetBox was the best way for it.
Let people add my Widget and they link me up on their site instead of them copying my button code and placing it on their site.
Here check out my Widget: http://www.widgetbox.com/widget/linkus
it's my Link Us Button Code in the form of a widget so people who invite me to be their friend on my site, they can then link me up and I then get visits to my site.
I thought it would be wise if you guys do the same thing, make a page on WidgetBox called
http://linkus.widgetbox.com/
and on their provide the codes to all the places you own so people can link you up such us:
button codes
bebo badge code
facebook profile badge code
facebook fanbox code
getsatisfaction helpbox code
and more...
this way people like me can easily link you guys up on our sites and you'll then be getting more visits to your site. I return for this idea you could add me to your team, my pictures are on my facebook:
http://facebook.com/warrenwoodhouse
and more on my bebo: http://www.warrenw88.bebo.com/
You are more than welcome to add me to the team on the staff page on WidgetBox, I don't want to be paid for helping you out, I just want a little place at WidgetBox so I can lend out more help to people and staff.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate?sooo.... just in short description,
we have to be a pro-member to get our blidgets installed on facebook?
I’m a bit grumpy
-
Only if you want to make a native Facebook application. If not, you can still add your blidget to the Facebook newsfeed like any other widget. -
Inappropriate?Chomz, not exactally. You can add your widgets the same way as pro-members do, it's just that the Facebook Application Creation Center on WidgetBox went wrong somewhere and all of us here at WidgetBox are pitching in to help out. As a frequent user of WidgetBox I'm also doing my fair share by helping out with support on here, along with Dave Rhea and other staff.

feel free to send any other messages to me if you need help setting up a widget or a app on other app centers including Bebo. I know how to set them properly and I'm more willing to help out with anything else or any other questions you would like to ask.
I use my widgets most of the time on my websites to show what I can do and I also help other people out on my websites with using my widgets aswell.
Since they know how to add them into their websites I'm more keen on checking up my status for my widgets everyday to see how many people have already added my widgets to their sites and I'm glad by how many their are.
We also provide free content so if their is anything you need please don't be afraid to get in touch with me whenever you want. All the details are on my getsatisfaction and on my website: http://www.798inc.co.cc/
Thanks and take care Chomz and other users who are also using WidgetBox.
