Non flash enabled sites

Thank you for providing such nice customizable widgets. They display very nicely on flash enabled sites. However, on a non-flash enabled site they display a large white space (where the widget should be) with some text that prompts the user to install flash. Is there some coding I can include to only show a small link , or adobe flash logo, prompting the user to install flash to view the content? The large white space is very ugly (in my opinion) on non-flash enabled sites

    Hey Pearl,

Sorry, but I think you might be mistaken. Flash is a client-side application, so whether the website supports Flash or not is not relevant. It's whether the client has Flash installed or not.

We cannot control what is displayed if the user does not have Flash installed, unfortunately. This is up to the browser.

    Hi Dave
Yes, I meant if the client has flash installed. Some flash applications, such as FLV players for instance, allow you to display a customizable link to download Adobe flash if the client does not have flash enabled or if they need to update it (or install it on their computer for that matter) instead of displaying an empty white container where the flash content should be displayed.

An example of what I insert into an html page with a flash movie embedded in it looks like this: " Get the latest Flash Player to see this player.

    .
<noscript> [Javascript required to view Flash movie, please turn it on and refresh this page]

    </noscript>".
This will display a simple Adobie link that prompts the client to download or update their Flash, instead of displaying an empty white (320px x 240px in this case) container. And then the actual function is handled by the players javascript.. Can something like this be implemented with Widgetbox?

Pearl - But what are you putting that text in? A noflash tag? Because those aren't as reliable as maybe they could be... Getting flash version, and if null, drawing out some custom messaging is quite a lot of overhead when the browser can handle it gracefully (like Firefox, Safari) if they like.

I'll be sure to bring it up with the team, but making the world nice for users that don't have flash may not be the highest priority relative to some other things going on, unfortunately.

I don't want to sound like I am complaining, because I am not. I just happened to view my blog in a non-flash browser and thought I would ask the question in case I was missing something. I am not a coder so I couldn't possibly know how hard it is to implement something like that. If it's something that can't be done then that's OK.

I looked at my HTML source and the particular code I listed is inserted automatically by the FLV player I am using to play some flash movies on my site. So I will post the link to the player I am using in case you would like to view the javascript / PHP. I think I can post it because it's not really a competing product since it doesn't pull in RSS feeds, but if you want to edit and remove it that's fine. The download link is "http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/flv-embed.zip". I believe what you would be looking for is in the "flv-embed.php".

So, like I said, if it's something that can't be done don't fret it. I still think you have a great prduct and you have certainly made it very easy for us non-coders to put widgets like this on our blogs / sites. And it's also very refreshing to see a developer respond so quickly to questions. Keep up the good work!

    Pearl,

Thanks for the note. Seriously, don't worry about complaining or coming off as complaining. Until you start typing in all caps with lots of spelling errors and maybe some added angst, you'll have my full attention. We all understand here that your website (as in the collective 'your') is important to you and your identity on the web. The last thing that I want is to degrade that identity.

We really will talk about it here, see if it's feasible, determine the priority if so, and go from there. We do it with pretty much any and all requests, especially valid ones like yours. At the same time, it'd be unfair of me to set unrealistic expectations for you that it'll be in next week.

Anyhow, I do appreciate the conversation, advice, and info. And I'll do my best to post an update here once we make some progress on it.

Thanks for the kudos and thanks for using the site!

    dr.
